“Time will tell whether the physical vessel is able to overcome these limitations by the will of the mind.”

The Challenge of REM Sleep Rebound

More than 48 hours passed since the start of the Ka Experiment. The second day proved to be much tougher than the first day, where there are periods, the mind is nearly dozing off, even while sitting. Precautions are taken to prevent the mind from entering sleep, especially the REM state, where dreaming takes place, for that would be the most obvious indicator of sleep taking place.

There are sometimes during the day where K was sitting down on a chair or crossed legged on bed, he experienced a huge pressure to nod off to sleep, this seems to be a lot more frequent when the body was in a sitting posture. When the body lacks REM sleep (aka dreaming) for more than a day, it tends to push itself to initiate REM sleep right at the very beginning of the sleep cycle (normally REM sleep only takes place near the end of the sleep cycles), this phenomenon is known as REM Rebound. This pressure became very noticeable to a point where when one closes his eyes, dream imagery would appear in the blank screen of the mind, this phenomenon can be very eerie for those who do not have a huge tendency for REM Sleep as the neural discharge during REM Sleep initiated by REM Rebound is a lot more intense than regular REM Sleep. K had to use coping methods such as standing up more frequently and actively browsing on his cell phone in order to prevent himself from falling into the REM Sleep stage.

Minute REM Rebound

There is a REM Rebound with K at 5:36 in the morning that lasted for around one and half minute. REM Rebound are very short dreams that comes spontaneously without following the regular sleep cycle, where the body goes from light sleep, deep sleep, and then REM sleep, there are various causes for this, sleep deprivation is one of them. And according to K, this is one of the most intense REM Rebounds he ever experienced, even though he is experienced with navigating various states of consciousness, losing sleep completely for a prolonged period means the brain lacked REM for more than a full day, this is causing the REM Rebound to hit back very hard.

This is how the intense REM episode happened, it has the theme likened to somewhat of a nuclear holocaust: It was early at 5:36am, K was sitting cross legged on his bed while listening to a podcast, he was holding the piece of synthetic nano gold crystal on one hand and studying it at the same time. And suddenly K felt an intense urge to sleep, as he was sitting up with the spine upright, it is not strictly a sleep prone position. Yet the REM sleep hit just a moment after, K found himself in another indoor room having a conversation with a real-life friend of his. As a matter of fact, K is somewhat aware that this is a dream scene, because everything happened too quickly, from going into REM state, experiencing the episode, and waking up. In this scene, K was talking to his friend casually, both of them were sitting on some couch in an environment that resembles a cafe. In just a few moments, K felt a strong shockwave coming from the back and as he turns and looks, all the windows shattered from a huge blast and the entire room turned into a somewhat fluid environment as the structures are melting. It all happened so fast that the body feels “disintegrated”, where one can no longer feel certain parts of his or her body, and there was a mix of various sensations, there was a feeling of pain, heat, shock, a feeling of water flowing in the entire scape of consciousness, it is perhaps a diluted version of what the real feeling would be like as this all happened in a dream scape, or that fading away feeling could be what the termination of life is like when it presents itself as an experience. K remember that he somehow remained aware after the blast and remained in that fluid environment and said to his friend, who was still there, “Is this how you all want to play?”. Perhaps it is due to the initial awareness he had as he slipped into the REM state. Nevertheless, K was back in this real-life room moments after the fluid environment appeared. While K was in a sitting position on a couch where his legs were on the “ground” in that cafe-fluid environment, he remained in his cross-legged sitting posture as he awoke from the REM state. There were after images from the experience lingering over K’s field of vision for the first few minutes on waking because the REM episode was very intense, and it took some time for K to reorient himself and decide the next course of action. After this, it is decided that sitting on bed, even cross-legged, is considered sleep-prone, and is to be avoided.

Subtle Changes in the Mental Experience

During other times of the day, it was relatively peaceful. According to K, there was this constant foggy mental haze that was forming around the mind and the environment, most of the time there is a relaxing sensation to it. When there was a need for the mind to focus, the haze adjusted itself and the area where the mind was focusing on became sharp, this was very noticeable in the visual sense, but also apparent in the auditory, olfactory and tactile sensations, where certain parts of the body might suddenly become numb to movement, but when attention was directed to it, it became functional again, the mechanism where the mind is communicating with the body via neural pathways became very apparent when it was observed from this perspective. Daily tasks were done with relative ease with no difficulty if it was during periods of alertness. Time will tell whether the physical vessel is able to overcome these limitations by the will of the mind.
