“Tóg go bog é ☘️ Take it easy.”
It might be a little late for a recap, but to be honest, it’s very aligned with the attitude I took during the trip.
FOMO struck again. I arrived in Cannes with good intentions, drifting between side events, connecting with good people, and representing the care-first stack.
But the sun had other ideas. It was too hot to be strategic. So it ended up being more like a working holiday. It was chaotic, healing, and hilarious.
Day 1
Of course, I wasn’t the only Irish crypto head making my way over. I bumped into the famous head of Polarchain at the gate. We travelled by car to Nice together, plotting our slow but sure takeover of the global crypto scene.
Upon arrival in Cannes, I went straight to meet Candice to avoid a permanent place on her blacklist. We were overdue a proper catch-up, and while we were at it, we talked about our roles in the Crypto Communications Collective.
Then came the Hype dinner. I arrived fashionably late, in spite of Airbnb and Uber troubles. I had contemplated not going but was then thankfully convinced by Ró to head in. With being so flustered, I managed to spill half the table on my lovely white jeans. Great entertainment for my pals Alex and Tessa sitting either side of me.
Day 2
I awoke with no urgency, and still ended up stress-refreshing Telegram while half-working from a sunlit and heavily air-conditioned Airbnb kitchen.
Buíochas le Dia, the evening brought some grounding: CCC dinner and drinks. It was a calm crowd with familiar faces and interesting dynamics.
Even though we finished up at a responsible time, I bumped into Rob and Harshna from the Irish web3 community. So we hung out for a bit, but I had to take it relatively handy with an MCing gig the following morning.
Day 3
I donned my ETH Dublin jersey and took to the stage at Taiko’s Based Rollup Summit. They seemed pleased with my performance, so hopefully that’s a few brownie points in the bag.
The week’s high point for me followed later that afternoon: W3PN’s Occupy event. Thank you Alina, Miglé, and Mykola.
I was supposed to deliver a lil talk on running cosy events but there was a jam with the Open Source Orchestra on the cards. Couldn’t say no, twas mighty craic.
After we got booted out by the park police, I brought some more members of the Irish web3 community back to my place to refresh.
Later on we ventured out to a beach club to meet Tessa, Heather and Amanda. The Refraction event was in our crosshairs but we got too comfy. Passing by for a look, we bumped into SJ and went for an adventure.
Our night fizzled out eventually but we had loads of excellent, silly times together.
Day 4
I was up at a time that I would call early for a call with some serious shams. More scheming with the Irish web3 community, you might be shocked to hear.
The vast majority of what remained in the day was spent horizontal on the beach, tanning. We joined the West Ham crew at the local Irish pub (a spiritual home, selected by Polar), and managed to get into RAAVE just as it peaked.
The queue was chaotic.
Some random dude was trying to manage it but everyone was prepared to rush security lol. I know water and bathroom access for queuers would have been appreciated. But once inside, it was magic.
Reunited with Laura, Tessa, Heather, CHG, Didier, Ornella & Fabio. Met a few new faces there that I hope to see in Argentina.
Day 5
EthCC afterparty day. I knew I’d be on Bass again for the open source jam, so I spent the day lazing on the beach, conserving energy for the night ahead.
Once I hit the stage, I was spotted by my CCC pals. There’s a special kind of joy playing for friends, especially when they aren’t expecting to see you in that position.
What’s even more magical is playing with the same tight crew from the Open Source Orchestra again. We’ve met up all over the world to jam together.
So far I’ve played in Denver, Rome, Bangkok, Berlin and now Cannes.
Day 6
Someone on Twitter called out the irony of crypto heads getting stranded in cannes because of union strikes.
I didn’t want to leave. Genuinely wouldn’t have minded if the flight was cancelled.
Alas, I made it home in one piece. Wiser, more tanned, and ready do as they say ‘lock in’. For what you ask?
What’s coming up
I’m currently assembling a support team for ETHGlobal NYC. I’m hoping to try my hand at vibe coding and possibly win some money for the ETH Dublin pot.
If you’d like to help me out, please DM me. If you don’t have my Telegram handle, find me in the Web3 Ireland group chat. If not in there, ping the ETH Ireland Twitter page.
