It is confusing to accurately estimate how many MOBILE rewards you can earn per month across your Helium MOBILE $20/$5 a month unlimited phone plan, your indoor hotspot and your outdoor hotspot and that amount changes over time…
So, I’ve done the research and taken the screenshots of the most current documentation we have from Helium, Nova Labs and the approved Helium Improvement Proposals to make it easier to calculate what you should be earning each month. Remember, this information is subject to change so you MUST check the repository of Helium Improvement Proposals here for the most current information
What you need:
To begin, you need to have a Helium MOBILE unlimted data phone plan, Helium MOBILE Indoor Hotspot and/or Helium MOBILE Outdoor CBRS to earn coveted MOBILE rewards. You can start earning MOBILE quickly by enabling Discovery Mapping on your MOBILE eSIM or pSIM smartphone. You can earn more MOBILE rewards on top of your phone’s rewards if you own an indoor and/or outdoor MOBILE hotspot.
You could always just buy a Helium Mobile Indoor hotspot or Outdoor CBRS and provide data and 5g cellular coverage for others, but pairing your own MOBILE phone plan is the best way to consistently grow your rewards. I will talk next about how to calculate and earn maximum rewards across the three MOBILE platforms in the following paragraph.
Calculating MOBILE rewards earned through the MOBILE app on your phone:
$20 a month for unlimited talk/text/data AND unlimited mobile hotspot tethering without having to sign a contract is probably the best phone plan going right now in all of North America.
Add on top of that sweet deal the ability to pay off that entire bill each month in MOBILE that you earned just mapping an area on your phone for essentially FREE makes this plan a no-brainer. So how much MOBILE do you earn each month just keeping your phone with you doing discovery mapping?
Here’s the breakdown:
Using HeliumGeek’s awesome website, we can see what the average Helium MOBILE subscriber is earning each day over the past month.
To earn the current maximum MOBILE per day on your phone (which is around ~780 MOBILE at the time of publishing this), you need to have Discovery Mapping enabled on your MOBILE app on your smartphone and map 40 hexes. Disovery Mapping sends out a ping of your latitude/longitude geo-coordinates to Helium every 10-15 seconds which they use to verify network usage in an area, which is valuable data for them when expanding cellular coverage. This is the description of hexes from Helium
Calculating MOBILE rewards earned through your Helium Indoor Hotspot:
Calculating the maximum daily MOBILE rewards earned through Discovery Mapping using your MOBILE app on your phone is easy enough. You just need to simply walk, bike, kayak, parasail, or drive around enough and you will easily map 40 hexes in a short amount of time. Calculating the maximum amount of MOBILE you can earn through hotspots is more confusing.
It is important to note: MOBILE is rewarded to discovery mapping MOBILE phone app subscribers for mapping a physical location of 40 hexes in size or more each day.
MOBILE is rewarded to indoor and outdoor hotspots for providing 5g cellular coverage in an area AND for uploading/downloading data through a hotspot from a MOBILE phone subscriber’s smartphone. Confused yet? Good, I’ll keep going.
First, we must go to the Helium Improvement Proposal repository and go to HIP82, the first HIP that codified rewarded data caps for indoor and outdoor hotspots.
https://github.com/helium/HIP/blob/main/0082-helium-mobile-service-provider.md
Scroll down about half-way trough HIP82’s repo and look for the section entitled, “Data Reward Limits for Hotspot Owners and Gaming Prevention for Unlimited Plans”. Here we can clearly see that the maximum rewarded data per month, per MOBILE subscriber, is 40gb. This applies to both Indoor hotspots AND Outdoor CBRS hotspots.
So, if you have just one MOBILE subscriber connected to your indoor or outdoor MOBILE network, the maximum amount of data that one user can send through your hotspot and reward the hotspot for is 40gb if they are on the $20/month phone plan. If you had two MOBILE subscribers sending data through your hotspot, you could get rewarded for a maximum of 80gb if they are both on the $20/month plan.
In actuality, the maximum amount of rewardable data on your hotspot will be less than 40gb per subscriber, however, as a later HIP clarified the calculation to determine the maximum amount of MOBILE an indoor hotspot could earn each month.
HIP93 clarified how each MOBILE indoor hotspot would be rewarded in a tiered system based on a set of criteria each indoor MOBILE hotspot would have to meet.

To achieve maximum Helium MOBILE rewards for your Indoor Hotspot each month, you need to keep this calculation in mind:
Your indoor MOBILE hotspot will ping throughout each day, every 60 seconds, with its “heartbeat” which is to say it will signal to the network it is powered-on, providing 5g coverage over WiFi and obviously has internet. Your speedtest multiplier is to check how fast the connection is and your trust score is based off this calculation below:
If you have the maximum multiplier for your speedtest, trust score and heartbeat score, you can earn the maximum amount of MOBILE per each MOBILE phone subscriber connecting to and transferring data on your provided MOBILE indoor network. For all addiontal information about heartbeats, speedtesting, location-based trust scores and how to view your stats for your indoor or outdoor hotspot, check out Helium’s documentation here:
https://docs.helium.com/mobile/proof-of-coverage/#uptime-heartbeats
For simplicity’s sake: The more MOBILE phone subscribers you have on your network and the more your indoor MOBILE network is consistently on without downtime, the more MOBILE you will earn from your indoor MOBILE hotspot. This is what I have earned over the past month on my indoor MOBILE hotspot with two MOBILE subscribers.
As you can see, I hit my 40gb per month cap and had an additional 10gb of rewarded data traffic the other MOBILE subscriber who briefly connected to my network used.
Even though I am no longer being rewarded for my data used on my MOBILE phone, I am still connecting to the MOBILE Indoor hotspot network I have to offload data. Non-MOBILE phone users can connect to your MOBILE indoor hotspot if you allow that in the settings, which can be a good way to onboard new people by providing them free, secure WiFi.
How to calculate your outdoor MOBILE CBRS rewards:
Disclaimer: I do not currently own a MOBILE Outdoor CBRS, however I do know people who do run MOBILE outdoor networks and I have read all the documentation so I am confident in what I am putting down here.
Outdoor MOBILE CBRS (Citizens Broadband Radio Service) hotspots have the potential to earn the most amount of MOBILE but you have to read the documentation carefully just as with the Indoor MOBILE hotspots to understand how your rewards will be calculated. Additionally, this calculation gets more complicated the more CBRS hotspots there are in a geographic hex area, but more on that further down.
Let’s return to HIP93:
Here, we can see that the CBRS hotspots have a maximum multiplier for MOBILE rewards of 2.5-4.0x. Compared to the maximum multiplier of .4x for Indoor MOBILE hotspots, you can certainly potentially earn much, much more MOBILE with a properly set-up outdoor CBRS.
We return again to the equation for rewards I posted above to calculate our maximum per day MOBILE rewards:
And we complicate that already confusing equation with this added information about estimated coverage points that only applies to Outdoor CBRS since only those hotspots will provide coverage beyond a single hex like the Indoor MOBILE hotspots do…
So, essentially, you need to have your Outdoor CBRS hotspot on consistently over a 7-day window and transmitting heartbeats and speedtests at the maximum rate, you need to have a strong signal AND you need to calculate your coverage area taking into consideration OTHER CBRS that may have seniority over YOUR CBRS..For this information, we have to use the clarifications provided in HIP74
https://github.com/helium/HIP/blob/main/0074-mobile-poc-modeled-coverage-rewards.md#reward-algorithm
What this in practical terms breaks down to is the pic below. The strongest and most senior signal within a hex will win the most rewards.
To get a rough idea of how much coverage and therefore MOBILE you can earn with your indoor or outdoor CBRS, head over to Helium’s fairly helpful website, the Helium Mobile Planner→
https://planner.hellohelium.com/explorer
In conclusion:
I earn on average 800 MOBILE per day on my phone, 1000 a day split between data rewards and POC rewards on my MOBILE Indoor hotspot and my friends earn ~1800 MOBILE a day through their CBRS including data and POC rewards. At current prices, you have to calculate for yourself if it is a good investment purchasing indoor and/or outdoor MOBILE hotspots. Knowing the volatility inherent in the crypto space, the floor could fall out any moment and tank the value of MOBILE or some hype could generate a huge rally in price and make MOBILE fans happy.
I like to look at the Helium MOBILE stats page each week to see how much we’re growing the network, when I first subscribed and got my hotspot, we had less than 50,000 subscribers and less than 5,000 hotspots, a lot has changed since then!
For what’s it worth, you can check out the MOBILE smartphone subscription yourself through my referall link here and earn $5 off your first phone bill. Have a good day!
